The Maine State town of Topsham, with a population approaching 8,800, is in Sagadahoc County and is the home of the historic Topsham Fair. The earliest evidence of people inhabiting the area was in the early 17th century when the region was known as Sawacook and inhabited by the Pejepscot Abenaki Indians. The area prospered from timber, with the first sawmill opening in 1716 close to the Cathance River, after which the town grew up and became registered on 31st January 1764, being named Topsham after the place of the same name in Devon, England. Topsham Fairgrounds were certainly in existence in the early 1860s and its famous, historic grandstand is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Racing has played an integral part in the Fair for some considerable time, the 4 furlong oval track hosting Standardbred races which culminate in the running of the Maine Sire Stakes. |
